Questions we get asked
Which SWA gland do I need: BW or CW?
Use a BW gland indoors, where the cable is dry and protected: it grips and earths the armour. Use a CW gland outdoors or anywhere wet, because it adds an inner and outer seal. Choose the gland size to suit the cable's outer diameter. We stock BW and CW gland packs from 20mm to 75mm.
What size cable lug do I need for 95mm² cable?
Use a 95mm² lug, chosen by the stud or bolt it fixes to. We stock 95mm² copper tube lugs for M8, M10, M12, M14 and M16 studs. Crimp them with a tool and die rated for 95mm².
Are bootlace ferrules the same as cord end terminals?
Yes. Bootlace ferrules and cord end terminals are two names for the same part: a crimped sleeve that finishes a stranded conductor before it goes into a terminal. They're colour-coded by conductor size.
What colour are 110V, 230V and 415V industrial connectors?
Under BS EN 60309 the colour shows the voltage: yellow is 110V, blue is 230V and red is 400/415V three-phase. The pin positions differ too, so a plug can't go into a socket of the wrong voltage.
What is Arctic Cable and why is it used on site?
Arctic Cable (arctic grade flexible cable, 3183YA/3184YA type) has a sheath made to stay flexible in the cold, so it doesn't crack or stiffen on a winter site. Yellow arctic is the usual choice for 110V and blue for 230V.
