Why it matters
PPE is the last line of defence when other controls can't remove the risk. It only protects you if it is the right type, fits and is worn properly.
The hazards
- Wrong PPE for the task
- Damaged or worn-out PPE
- PPE that doesn't fit
- Not wearing PPE for 'just a minute'
Stay safe
- Wear the PPE the site rules and risk assessment require
- Check your PPE before each use and replace it if damaged
- Make sure it fits: ask for a different size if it doesn't
- Store PPE clean and dry
- Know which tasks need extra PPE, such as RPE, hearing or eye protection
- Don't alter PPE
- Report lost or damaged PPE
Ask the team
- What PPE does your task today need?
- How do you know your PPE still works?
- Who do you go to for replacement PPE?
The law and guidance
Personal Protective Equipment at Work Regulations 1992.
General guidance to help you give a toolbox talk. It doesn't replace your site's risk assessments, method statements, permits or training. Check it against your own site rules before you give it.
