Portable generators on site
Download the PDF with attendance sheet
Why it matters
Generators provide power where there is no supply, but bring fuel, fume and electrical hazards.
The hazards
- Exhaust fumes in enclosed spaces, including carbon monoxide
- Fuel spills and fire
- Electric shock from faulty earthing
- Noise
Stay safe
- Never run a generator indoors or in an enclosed space
- Refuel only when the engine is off and cool
- Keep fuel stored safely away from the generator
- Make sure the generator is earthed and set up correctly by a competent person
- Use 110V for site tools, through a transformer where the generator outputs 230V
- Keep it on firm, level ground with a drip tray
Ask the team
- Where is the generator, and is it in the open air?
- How do you refuel safely?
- Who set up the earthing?
