Why it matters
Dropped loads and failed lifting gear can kill. Every lift needs planning, the right gear and competent people.
The hazards
- Overloading lifting equipment
- Damaged slings, chains and shackles
- Unplanned or rushed lifts
- People under suspended loads
Stay safe
- Every lift must be planned by a competent person
- Use only lifting gear that is marked with its safe working load and in date for thorough examination
- Check slings and accessories before use
- Never stand or walk under a suspended load
- Use the agreed signals and one signaller
- Stop the lift if anything changes, such as wind or ground conditions
Ask the team
- Who is the appointed person for lifting on this site?
- What do you check on a sling before use?
- What would make you stop a lift?
