Why it matters
Confined spaces such as chambers, tanks, manholes and voids can contain toxic gas or too little oxygen. Many deaths are would-be rescuers.
The hazards
- Lack of oxygen
- Toxic or flammable gas
- Flooding or flowing materials
- Difficult access and rescue
Stay safe
- Avoid entry if the work can be done from outside
- Only trained people may enter, under a safe system of work and permit
- Test the atmosphere before and during entry
- Have a rescue plan and equipment in place before entry
- Keep someone outside in contact at all times
- Never go in to rescue someone without the right equipment and training
Ask the team
- Are there any confined spaces on this site?
- What must be in place before anyone enters?
- What would you do if someone collapsed inside?
