Why it matters
A bursting disc or a kickback from a cut-off saw can cause severe injuries. Correct mounting and use are essential.
The hazards
- Discs bursting
- Kickback
- Wrong disc for the material or speed
- Missing guards
- Dust and noise
Stay safe
- Only trained people may mount abrasive wheels
- Check the disc is the right type and its maximum speed matches the tool
- Inspect discs for damage before fitting
- Keep guards fitted and adjusted
- Hold the tool firmly with both hands and keep a stable stance
- Use water suppression or extraction for dust
- Wear eye, hearing and respiratory protection as required
- Never use the side of a cutting disc to grind
Ask the team
- Who is trained to change discs?
- How do you check a disc is right for the tool?
- How do you control the dust?
